2008 Dixon Mower Models Facts

Dixon mowers are broken down into 7 model groups. They are the SpeedZTR, Ram, Ram Mag, Ram Ultra, Black Bear, Kodiak, and Grizzly. If you want to argue about it, the Ram series could be said to be one model group but there are enough differences in them that I believe they should be kept separate.

Overview
The Dixon SpeedZTR and Ram series mowers are considered to be Residential mowers built for the homeowner who mows his lawn once a week and nothing else. The Ram Mag and Ram Ultra (the Ultra being new in model year 2008) are considered to be a hybrid, low-level commercial units which can be used for commercial applications of lower intensity. The Black Bear is a heavy-duty commercially built unit with smaller cut sizes (34 and 44) for operators who are concerned with quality of cut issues on uneven terrain or for places where access is limited to a smaller entrance width. Kodiak and Grizzly introduce commercial units that are built for heavy duty use. Each series introduces heavier drive components.

SpeedZTR

The Dixon SpeedZTR (pronounced "speedster") is available in 5 versions with 4 cut sizes...30,36,42, and 44. The 30 is a single blade, the 36 and 42 are twin blades and the 44 is a 3 blade deck. The 30, 36, and 42 all come with Briggs and Stratton single-cylinder Intek engines with ample horsepower. The 44 is available in either a Kohler Courage single (20 HP) or a Briggs Intek ELS Twin with 22 HP. All Dixon SpeedZTRs feature the Hydro-Gear EZT hydrostatic transmission.

Dixon Ram mowers come in 2 versions. They introduce the 2800 Hydro-Gear tranmission and are available in 44 or 50 inch cuts. One engine is your only "choice"... the 26 HP Briggs ELS vertical-shaft twin.

The Dixon Ram Mag has 5 variations. The ZT2800 trans adds a charge pump to beef the Mag's drive up. You can cut either 44 or 50 inches. The Mags also introduce some Commercial engines. Choices are the 24 HP Kohler Courage twin, (which we do not consider commercial but are available to allow purchasers a lower priced unit) the Kawasaki FH 21HP twin, and the Honda GXV620 20HP twin. We like the Kawasaki, but is not available in the 44 inch model.

The Dixon Ram Ultra comes in 3 versions and is new in 2008. The Ram Ultra begins the pump and wheel motor drive units. Engine choice is not its strong suit. Each cut size has a dedicated engine. The Kohler Courage Pro that powers these units is a good engine and brings this unit in at a very attractive price but the Courage is not as long-lived as the Command so caveat emptor. The Ultra is very reasonably priced but probably not a choice for a heavy duty user just because of the engine. The Ultra would be a good choice for someone with a large acreage or a few small commercial accounts to mow. The nice part is that the Ultra comes with a choice of 50(25HP), 60(25HP), or 72(27HP) inch cutting widths.

The Dixon Black Bear mowers start the Bear series which signifies the true commercial machines. Parker pumps and wheel motors drive these as well as being assured that all the engines are made for commercial mowing use. Black Bear is available in 2 variations - 34 and 44 inch cuts and Kawasaki 17(34) or 19(44)Hp engines.

The next Bear is the Dixon Kodiak with 5 variations. You have a choice of Kohler Command Pro 20 or 25, Kawasaki 21, or Honda 20 HP engines on 4 52 inch models and a 60 inch model with a 25 HP Kohler Command Pro. Again, Parker pumps and motors drive the Kodiak series.

The largest Bear series is the Dixon Grizzly. 4 different units to choose from. All units come with either the Kohler Command Pro 27 or 30...depends on deck size. 52(27),60(27 or 30), and 72(30HP) inch decks are available. Large Capacity Parker pumps and motors provide the wheel power.
